Pathology of Oral Cysts and Tumors

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Weo Admin
a woman getting a dental examThough the terms may be alarming, cysts and tumors in the mouth are usually benign. However, it is wise to evaluate any abnormal oral growth promptly to determine appropriate treatment. Understanding key differences helps determine the pathology and best resolution to maintain your oral well-being.

Distinguishing Cysts from Tumors

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs arising from tissue components like leftover embryonic parts. They are enclosed in a membrane and often fluctuate in size. Tumors are solid masses of excessive tissue growth that do not contain fluid. They are usually well-defined nodules that do not change markedly. Some remain relatively dormant, while others grow progressively.

Common Types and Locations

Some common oral cysts are mucous extravasation cysts on the lip, gums, or under the tongue and benign bony growths called ossifying fibromas. Smooth, painless lumps called fibromas and vascular-appearing pyogenic granulomas are also common. Salivary gland cysts, dental follicular cysts, and benign fibro-osseous jaw lesions may also arise.

Determining the Risks

Most cysts and tumors of the mouth are non-cancerous with minimal health risks. However, if left untreated, some can damage surrounding teeth, bone, or other structures. Any growth causing functional impairment or worsening symptoms warrants removal. Rapid growth or an ulcerated surface elevates concern and requires prompt biopsy. Thankfully, over 80% of lesions are benign.

Treatment Options

Based on the type, location, and health risks posed by the cyst or tumor, options range from monitoring to surgical excision. Lasers provide a less invasive approach to removal in select cases, with less bleeding and quicker healing. Determining optimal treatment through expert pathology analysis ensures the growth is resolved safely and effectively.

Don't panic if faced with oral growth - chances are it is not harmful. With an accurate diagnosis by your dentist and mindful management, cysts and tumors can be handled properly, and your oral comfort can be restored.
