Is Mouthwash Worth Using?

Posted on 4/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Mouthwash on a counterTelevision is full of dental health commercials, and many of them ask you to use their mouthwash. There are all kinds of mouthwash on the market, and it can be hard to choose one that fits your needs. Here are some tips for finding the right mouthwash for you.

A Little History of Mouthwash

Mouthwash and toothpaste developed roughly at the same time in the late 19th century. This time period also marked the beginning of dentists opening their offices across the country to help people care for their teeth. One of the oldest mouthwashes, Listerine, was touted as an amazing medical antiseptic cleaner, and mouthwashes were marketed as teeth cleaners.

What Is Mouthwash Used For?

Most people use mouthwash for two purposes: to make their breath as fresh as possible and also to get rid of germs in their mouths. Mouthwashes can accomplish both of these goals by reducing the amount of bacteria in your mouth. Your mouth bacteria are responsible for tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath, especially if you have a lot of bacteria in your mouth.

What Kinds of Mouthwash Are Available?

Whatever your particular tooth and gum issues are, there is a mouthwash that can help you with your dental goals. If you want to protect your gums against gum disease, look for a mouthwash that kills bacteria with antiseptics and reduces the amount of plaque on your teeth.

If you want whiter teeth, look for a mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide or baking soda. Both are whitening agents that slowly make teeth whiter over time.

If you are fighting halitosis or bad breath, you want to look for an antiseptic or antibacterial mouthwash. The more bacteria you can eliminate from your mouth, the better your breath will be. You may also want to look for a mouthwash that moistens your mouth, which increases the amount of beneficial saliva you have.
