Should I Go to Another Country for Dental Care?

Posted on 5/15/2024 by Dr. Dani Stansell
Consultation with an Oral Surgeon in the united statesMedical and dental tourism has become increasingly popular due to the high costs of some medical procedures. If you are on a tight budget and about to undergo an expensive dental procedure, you may wonder if it is a good idea to get your procedure done in another country. While dental procedures can be expensive, not having those procedures done in the United States can cause more problems and expenses than if you simply had the procedures done here.

Dental Care Abroad

Several countries, such as Mexico, offer Americans good dental care less expensively than in the United States. Many countries in the developed world have dental care comparable to that in your home country. However, having your dental work done outside of the United States has several significant drawbacks.

Drawbacks to Dental Care Outside the United States

You will be paying the entire cost of your procedure upfront. If you have dental insurance, it will not cover your dental procedures abroad. You will also have to pay your own expenses to get to the country, as well as meals and hotel stays. Any dental care you have done outside the United States cannot be covered by your dental insurance if you have complications later. For example, if you go to another country to have your wisdom teeth removed and you return home and get an infection, your treatment for the infection will not be covered by insurance.

There are other issues with dental procedures done abroad as well. If you experience complications that require hospitalization, your health insurance will not cover your medical expenses in another country. There are also no guarantees that if a dentist botches your procedure you will have no legal recourse there.

What Should I Do?

While the cost of dental procedures is more cost-effective in other countries in some cases, it is not a good idea to get your dental care in another country. There are too many risks involved. Instead, why not look at having your dental procedure done here? Many dentists offer payment plans and financial terms. If you are not sure what we offer, why not give us a call to make an appointment for a consultation?
