Signs of a Failed Dental Bone Graft

These set up a well-founded base with the help of building or rebuilding the jawbone if it gets compromised by periodontal disease, trauma, or tooth loss. But then, just like any other medical procedure, it has risks. Knowing the symptoms may aid you in seeking early intervention if you notice any of the following signs of a failed dental bone graft:

Persistent Pain

Of course, some pain is associated with the recovery time after a surgical procedure. However, when it persists for days or even several weeks post-surgery, then that may be indicative of a problem. If it does not subside after taking prescribed medication or intensifies further, then this could be a symptom of infection or insufficient healing of the new graft.

Swelling

A small amount of swelling should be present after the operation. When this swelling rapidly increases and fails to subside for a prolonged period, it may indicate inflammation or infection. Constant swelling for more than a day or two should send you back to the dentist.

Visibility of the Graft Material

Graft bits from the site indicate that the graft has failed. This is an emergent condition called rejection of graft, where immediate attention is warranted to avoid further complications.

Signs of Infection

Redness, warmth, pus, and drainage from the surgery site are vital signs of infection. Other signs include fever and chills, which indicate that your body is fighting off an infection.

Delayed Healing

You should observe some positive healing at the graft site or the gum tissues, but when they are not healing, the site will remain raw and sore for some time. This sign means it is likely the graft is not integrating as expected.

If any of these symptoms are present, it is vital to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Early detection and intervention may be essential for a successful outcome and for preventing further problems.
