Dental Restorations and Pregnancy

Posted on 7/1/2024 by Dr. Dani Stansell
Woman making a heart on her stomachMaintaining good dental health is crucial during pregnancy. In fact, it becomes even more important to prioritize oral health as a pregnant individual. Pregnancy leads to a heightened risk of experiencing tooth decay, gum disease, and related complications. While that is true, you may not be allowed to undertake all restoration treatments during pregnancy. Below are the dental restorations that are safe for pregnant women.

Orthodontic Treatments

If you are already undergoing orthodontic treatment when you get pregnant, there is no need to halt it. You can even have new braces installed while pregnant, though your dentist or orthodontist might suggest waiting until after childbirth.

However, getting new braces involves X-rays, which dentists may prefer to avoid during the first trimester. Additionally, if your facial structure alters with pregnancy weight gain, it might necessitate adjustments to your braces or the creation of new aligners.

Teeth Whitening

You can undergo teeth whitening during the first and second trimester. While teeth whitening can be done during pregnancy, your dentist might advise postponing it until after childbirth. During the third trimester, it is preferable to avoid teeth whitening and other cosmetic treatments, as lying still on your back during the procedure might be uncomfortable.

Emergency Root Canal Treatment

In the event of a dental emergency, a root canal can be conducted at any point during pregnancy without delay. Even so, since X-rays are necessary, the second trimester is considered the optimal time for dental surgery. After the second trimester, your dentist may only suggest an over-the-counter prescription to manage the pain.

Tooth Extractions

Dentists use tooth extraction as a last resort to save oral health from further damage. If a tooth is severely damaged by decay or injury, posing a risk to oral health, removal may be necessary. Extractions are okay at any stage of pregnancy, yet the second trimester is often recommended as the optimal time by dentists. This helps avoid X-rays in the first semester.

Do not get any dental restorations or treatment while pregnant unless your dentist is aware. If you think you are pregnant, tell your dentist for dental care tailored to your situation.
