What Are Dental Implants

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Dr. Dani Stansell
What Are Dental ImplantsArtificial tooth roots, called dental implants are permanently fixed in your mouth to replace natural teeth. They are an effective and popular long-term solution compared to dentures, crowns, and bridges. For people who have failing or missing teeth or chronic dental problems, dental implants are a great option. Dental implants fit, function, and feel like natural teeth and are becoming more popular in tooth replacement. The titanium implant that doctors use fuses to your bone cells of the jaw over time, forming a durable and strong anchor for your new replacement teeth. With dental implants, there are no movement or slippage, and no regular repair is needed. Those who have dental implants can wear them and smile openly and don't have to worry about teeth malfunctions.

The Three Parts to Dental Implants

Dental implants have three parts. One part is the implant which is a screw that takes the place of a root for your new teeth and permanently attaches to the jaw. The second part is the abutment, which is removable by your dentist, but is permanent. It is a connector that holds and supports a tooth or multiple teeth. The third part is called the crown. The crown is also known as the prosthetic tooth. The crown is part of the tooth that you can see, and it is usually made of porcelain or zirconium for good looks and durability.

Dental implants can be used as a replacement for a single or multiple teeth. Full upper and lower sets of teeth, called full mouth implants, can also be replaced by dental implants. You may be a candidate for a full mouth treatment if you need to restore a full arch of teeth in your mouth. In this procedure, an oral surgeon places 4 implants in the mouth to attach a full arch of teeth to.
