The Medical Benefits of Braces

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Dr. Dani Stansell
The Medical Benefits of BracesBraces have been a widespread treatment option for adults and children who seek a more appealing smile. While a lovely smile is enticing, braces provide several medical benefits, some of which may amaze you.

Improved Bite

Braces can be used to straighten teeth, but they can also be used for unaligned bites. The dental word for how your lower and upper sets of teeth come together is "bite." When your bite contains gaps due to misaligned or missing teeth, it can affect your ability to chew up your food properly, which is important for proper digestion. A misaligned bite can make it tricky to eat or chew correctly. A bite that is misaligned can become unpleasantly painful if left untouched potentially causing lockjaw, jaw pain-related migraines, and TMJ, all of which may require complicated medical and dental therapy in the future.

Improved Jaw Alignment

Some speech impairments are caused by overcrowded teeth or jaw misalignment. The good news is that orthodontic treatment can correct the palate and jaw alignment that causes speech impediments. A palate expander may be necessary for orthodontic treatment before braces are applied. Expanding your palate can also improve snoring, breathing, and possibly alleviate sinus and ear problems that are caused by jaw misalignment. Your face will look more proportionate with proper jaw alignment as well.

Better Habits

It's more challenging to clean crowded and misaligned teeth. If teeth can't be cleaned precisely bacteria can form and build up leading to cavities and gum disease. Flossing and brushing will naturally be improved by straightening crowded teeth. Mouthwash and daily flossing are good oral care habits. Those with braces need to take special care of their teeth to prevent tooth stains, bad breath, and gum disease. If you have braces, you should brush and floss between the wires and brackets with caution.
