Healthy Mouth for a Healthy Heart

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Dr. Dani Stansell
Healthy Mouth for a Healthy HeartYou have probably heard that it is essential to keep your heart healthy. But did you know that your mouth is just as important? Believe it or not, there is a strong connection between the health of your mouth and the health of your heart. Here is what you should know.

Connection Between Heart and Oral Health

Most people are aware of the connection between heart health and diet. Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fats is essential for maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. However, few people realize that there is also a strong connection between oral health and heart health. Studies have shown that people with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease. The bacteria that cause gum disease can enter the bloodstream and damage the arteries, resulting in atherosclerosis. In addition, inflammation from gum disease can contribute to blood clots, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Therefore, it is vital to take care of your teeth and gums for your oral health and heart.

How to Care for Oral Health for a Better Heart Health?

First of all, brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This will help to prevent cavities and gum disease. Be sure to floss daily as well - this will remove plaque from areas that your toothbrush can not reach. And do not forget to see your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups. In addition to brushing and flossing, there are other things you can do to take care of your oral health. Quit smoking if you smoke - tobacco use is a significant risk factor for gum disease and heart disease. Eat a healthy diet - sugary snacks can contribute to cavities, while fiber-rich foods can help prevent gum disease. And last but not least, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water - this will help keep your mouth healthy and your heart healthy.
