How To Prevent Gum Disease: 3 TipsIf you want to keep your smile healthy and sparkling, taking care of your gums is essential. Gum disease is a common oral health problem that can cause tooth loss and other serious health problems if left untreated. This post will discuss three tips for preventing gum disease. Follow these tips, and you'll be on your way to keeping your gums healthy.

Brush Your Teeth At Least Twice a Day

Brushing involves using a toothbrush to clean the surfaces of your teeth. Be sure to use a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that helps to protect your teeth from decay. Using a good-quality brush that will not damage your gums is also essential. You should change a toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Floss At Least Once a Day

Flossing is the process of removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums. If plaque is not eliminated, it can harden and turn into calculus (tartar). You must floss to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth.

See Your Dentist for Regular Checkups and Cleanings

Some benefits of professional dental cleanings include removal of tartar (calculus) that you cannot remove with regular brushing and flossing, polishing your teeth to remove surface stains, an evaluation of your risk for tooth decay and gum disease, and a chance to discuss your at-home dental care routine and changes you might need to make. An expert dentist will be able to spot the early signs of gum disease and give you the best possible treatment plan to prevent it from progressing.

Our dentists provide dental services, and our hygienists are licensed to provide preventive dental services. The best method to prevent gum disease is to see your dentist regularly for professional teeth cleanings and oral exams.
