How to Treat Misaligned Jaw

How to Treat Misaligned JawA misaligned jaw can cause several health issues, such as poor teeth alignment, regularly biting your tongue, issues with speech and biting, and changes in facial appearance. A good way to address jaw misalignment is by understanding the underlying causes. In this case, it is good to receive a professional diagnosis from the dentist. Your dentist may suggest treatment options such as the ones below.

Braces

In most cases, the dentist can use braces to treat jaw misalignment. The braces work by bringing the jaws back into their normal position. Usually, the dentist can recommend braces when there are overbites. The braces bring the lower jaw forward while moving the upper teeth back into their position. During the treatment procedure, the orthodontist places wires and brackets over the upper and lower teeth. He then starts adjusting pressure on each tooth to ensure that all teeth get into position.

Headgear Braces

In cases where the braces cannot work alone, the orthodontist may recommend headgear with the braces. These appliances work well when there are serious bite problems. For instance, when people notice a large gap when they smile, the orthodontist may need to move some teeth forward and shift others backward. This happens with the help of headgear braces. Headgear braces feature wires that extend past the mouth. Your professional may suggest wearing the appliance for 12-14 hours, depending on your oral needs.

Jaw Surgery

In situations where the jaw misalignment affects your speaking and sleeping, the dentist may recommend surgery. The oral surgeon starts by making cuts behind the molars. He then moves the jaw to its new position. It can be forward or backward, depending on the misalignment. Plates and screws are then placed to hold the jawbone as it heals. If you have jaw misalignment, knowing when to consider treatment may be challenging. You can visit our office for a consultation. Our professionals will determine the best treatment option for you.
