What Invisalign® Can Treat

Invisalign® is designed to correct a broad range of alignment and bite issues. The system uses digitally planned, sequential aligner trays to reposition your teeth with precision, addressing problems that many patients assume require traditional metal braces. Common concerns that respond well to Invisalign® treatment include:

•  Crowded teeth — Overlapping or tightly spaced teeth that are difficult to clean and prone to uneven wear
•  Gaps and spacing — Visible spaces between teeth that affect the appearance of your smile and can trap food
•  Overbite — Upper front teeth that extend too far over the lower teeth, sometimes causing jaw discomfort
•  Underbite — Lower teeth that sit in front of the upper teeth, which can affect chewing and speech
•  Crossbite — Upper and lower teeth that don’t align properly when the mouth is closed, leading to uneven wear
•  Open bite — Front teeth that don’t touch when the back teeth are together, which can make biting into food difficult

Not every orthodontic case is suited for clear aligners. Severe skeletal discrepancies or certain complex bite issues may require a different approach. Our North Raleigh team evaluates your specific situation during the consultation and provides an honest recommendation about whether Invisalign® will deliver the results you’re looking for. Invisalign® is one of several cosmetic dentistry options available at our practice, and our goal is always to match you with the treatment that makes the most sense for your smile.

Your North Raleigh Dental Team

Our experienced dental team at the North Raleigh office takes a thorough, technology-driven approach to every Invisalign® case. Your treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation that includes digital x-rays and a 3D scan of your teeth using our iTero® scanner. This digital impression captures the precise shape and position of every tooth in minutes — no uncomfortable putty trays required — and produces a highly accurate model that drives the design of your entire aligner series.

What sets the experience apart is the level of planning that happens before you ever wear your first tray. Our team uses your scan data to map each tooth’s movement from its current position to its ideal alignment, creating a step-by-step digital roadmap for your treatment. You’ll see a simulation of your projected results on screen, which gives you a clear picture of the outcome and helps you decide to move forward with confidence. Throughout treatment, our dentists monitor your progress at regular checkups and make any necessary adjustments to keep things on track.

Your Treatment Journey

The Invisalign® process at our North Raleigh office follows a predictable sequence that keeps you informed at every step:

1.  Consultation and Digital Scan — Your dentist examines your teeth and bite, discusses your goals, and determines whether Invisalign® is the best path forward. If it is, an iTero® 3D scan of your teeth is captured during this same visit. The scan is fast, comfortable, and far more precise than traditional impressions.
2.  Treatment Planning — Your scan data is used to create a detailed digital treatment plan that maps every movement your teeth will make. You’ll review a projected simulation of your final smile before approving the plan, so there are no surprises.
3.  Aligner Delivery and Fitting — Once your custom aligner series is fabricated, you return to our office for a fitting. Your dentist ensures the first set seats correctly, explains how to insert and remove them, and provides care instructions. Small tooth-colored attachments may be bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip more effectively during specific movements.
4.  Daily Wear — You wear each set of aligners for approximately two weeks, 20 to 22 hours per day. Remove them for meals and oral hygiene, then put them back in. Each tray advances your teeth slightly closer to their target positions.
5.  Progress Checkups — You visit our North Raleigh office every six to eight weeks for a brief appointment. Your dentist confirms that your teeth are tracking according to plan and provides your next sets of trays. These visits are quick and rarely require any additional procedures.
6.  Completion and Retainer — When you finish your final set of aligners, a custom retainer is made to hold your teeth in their new positions. Wearing the retainer as directed is essential for keeping your results stable over the long term.

Benefits of Invisalign®

Hands forming a heart shape with two clear aligners against a black background, symbolizing love for straight, healthy teeth. Our North Raleigh patients choose Invisalign® for a combination of practical and aesthetic reasons that traditional braces simply can’t match:

  • Nearly Invisible — The clear trays blend in with your natural teeth, so most people will never notice you’re wearing them. This matters to adults in professional settings and teens who want to avoid the stigma associated with metal brackets.

  • Eat Whatever You Want — Because the aligners come out before every meal, there are no food restrictions. Enjoy the same foods you always have without worrying about breaking a bracket or getting something stuck in wires.

  • Straightforward Oral Hygiene — Brush and floss your teeth the way you normally would. Simply remove your aligners, clean your teeth, and put them back. This routine keeps your gums and teeth healthier throughout treatment compared to the challenges of cleaning around fixed brackets.

  • Comfortable Design — Each tray is made from smooth, BPA-free plastic that fits snugly against your teeth. There are no sharp metal edges, and the pressure applied by each new set is gentle and gradual rather than sudden.

  • Fewer Office Visits — Checkups every six to eight weeks mean fewer trips to the office than traditional braces require. Each visit is brief, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule — especially with our North Raleigh office’s extended hours on select days.

  • Ideal for Active Lifestyles — Athletes and musicians appreciate that the aligners can be removed for games, performances, and practices. There is no risk of a ball or instrument catching on a metal bracket, which makes Invisalign® a safer and more practical option for active teens and adults.

Invisalign® Cost & Insurance at North Raleigh

Invisalign® pricing depends on the complexity of your case, the number of aligner sets your treatment requires, and the estimated duration from start to finish. Our North Raleigh team provides a transparent cost estimate at your consultation so you can weigh your options with all the facts in front of you.

Stansell Dentistry Associates accepts most major dental insurance plans that include orthodontic benefits, including MetLife, BCBS, Delta Dental, Ameritas, United Concordia, Aetna, United Healthcare, and Cigna. Many plans cover Invisalign® at the same rate as traditional braces, and our team files claims on your behalf to help maximize your coverage. For patients without orthodontic insurance or with remaining out-of-pocket costs, Sunbit pay-over-time financing and CareCredit offer manageable monthly payment options. Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign® in North Raleigh

How do I clean my Invisalign® aligners?

Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water every time you remove them. Once a day, gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, unscented liquid soap or Invisalign® cleaning crystals. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic, and skip colored or abrasive toothpaste that can stain or scratch the trays. Keeping your aligners clean prevents bacterial buildup and keeps them looking clear throughout each two-week cycle.

Can I play sports while wearing Invisalign®?

Yes. Many of our North Raleigh patients, especially teens, continue playing sports during treatment. For non-contact activities, you can leave your aligners in without issue. For contact sports like basketball or soccer, remove your aligners and wear a protective mouthguard instead. Your aligners go back in as soon as the game or practice is over. This flexibility is one of the key reasons families choose Invisalign® over traditional braces for active teens.

What are the small bumps on my teeth during Invisalign® treatment?

Those small bumps are called attachments. They are tooth-colored composite dots bonded to specific teeth to give the aligners additional grip for more complex movements, such as rotating a tooth or correcting a significant tilt. Not every patient needs attachments, but when they are used, they are barely noticeable and are removed easily at the end of treatment without affecting your tooth enamel.

Is Invisalign® treatment painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure rather than pain. Each time you switch to a new set of aligners, you may feel tightness for the first day or two as your teeth begin to shift. This discomfort is typically minimal and fades quickly as your mouth adjusts. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help if needed, but many patients find they do not require them after the first few tray changes.

What if my teeth need more movement after I finish my aligner series?

In some cases, a short round of additional aligners called refinements may be needed to perfect your results. Refinements involve a new scan and a small supplemental set of trays that target any teeth that did not reach their ideal position during the initial series. This is a normal part of the Invisalign® process and is typically included in your original treatment plan. Our team discusses this possibility upfront so you are prepared if it becomes necessary.
